Welcome to the ultimate cruelty-free makeup guide! This page is the #1 resource for finding cruelty-free makeup at every price point. It has been regularly updated since we created it, and new brands continue to be added in 2021.
Note: I originally created this guide several years ago, and it now compiles over 160 vetted cruelty-free brands! I’ve had to remove some which are no longer cruelty-free, which is unfortunate, but I’ve also added many more since the guide was published. Thank you to everyone who has shared and used this guide to shop cruelty-free! I’m so glad to see that it’s been helpful to you. If you love this guide, consider sharing it with a friend.
Our Cruelty-Free Criteria
All brands listed have been vetted to be cruelty-free, meaning that no animal testing is being performed on either finished products or ingredients at any point during production and beyond. Our criteria is the Cruelty-Free 5, meaning:
- Their company doesn’t test finished products or ingredients on animals
- Their suppliers don’t test finished products or ingredients on animals
- No third parties test their finished products or ingredients on their behalf
- They do not test on animals where required by law
- Their products are not sold in stores in mainland China
Find out more about the Cruelty-Free 5 and how to determine if brands are truly cruelty-free.
In This Guide
Who said there aren’t many cruelty-free and vegan makeup brands?! I created this guide containing 160 brands to show you that it’s possible to find quality cruelty-free makeup for every budget, from high-end to drugstore.
You’ll find something for everyone, no matter the makeup brands you’re looking for. Brands are also split into 3 sections: mid-range and high-end, drugstore or budget-friendly, and “clean” (conscious, natural, or organic). In each category, you’ll find everything from natural-looking makeup to bold and glam. There’s no need to support brand that test on animals, and you’ll absolutely find brands that you love in this guide.
I divided this guide into 3 sections (click to skip to those sections):
For the first 2 sections, price point is the divider. By “mid-range” and “high-end” brands, I mean that their products typically cost more than $20 per product. For brands that fall under the “drugstore” or “budget-friendly” category, these brands are either available in stores or online, and their products typically fall under the $20 mark.
I also included a “clean beauty” section. Although the term “clean” may not be the best to describe the movement in general, I’m using the term to avoid confusion. “Clean beauty” refers to brands whose products don’t contain any potentially harmful ingredients. These brands are typically mid-range to high-end, though there are some affordable options as well.
Timeline
2017 UPDATE: I added more brands to the list! I also now mention ALL cruelty-free brands regardless of parent companies. If a brand is owned by a company that isn’t cruelty-free, you’ll find a * beside the brand and the parent company will be clearly marked.
2018 UPDATE: Vegan products for top brands were added! The biggest brands now have their vegan products listed below.
2019 UPDATE: Over 40 new cruelty-free makeup brands were added!
2021 UPDATE: New brands added! The post was overhauled.

We love their Putty Primer, Cream and Powder blushes, and Eyebrow Pencil.
E.l.f. offers inexpensive products (typically around 3$ to 4$ per individual item) in sleek packaging that mimics higher-end brands. They’re a hit or miss brand and the prices mostly reflect the quality, meaning their makeup most often doesn’t measure up to high-end brands, but they do have some great products and very decent dupes. Their affordable prices make them a great brand for those on a budget, or just starting out with makeup. They reformulated all their brushes and they are now 100% vegan!

Milani is hands down one of the best drugstore makeup brands, plus they’re cruelty-free. They offer a good selection of vegan products, and their products cane be found worldwide. We love their Silky Matte Bronzing Powder which is super smooth, and we also recommend their eyeshadow palettes among many other stand-out products. They’re made in the USA and Italy.
An overall solid and good quality drugstore brand that’s also certified cruelty-free by the Leaping Bunny. Check out their Baked Blushes (Luminoso in particular is a popular favorite), eyeshadows and eyeshadow primer, pencil and liquid eyeliners, as well as lip products; most of these are long-lasting and very pigmented. They have a great selection of both natural and bold colors, and some good makeup staples!

NYX can be found in many counties across the world, and they’re an affordable drugstore makeup brand. In the United States, you’ll find them at Walmart, Ulta, Target, and Walgreens among other. In Canada, they’re available at Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall, and in the UK you’ll find them at Boots and Superdrug. They’re known for providing high-quality products in wide shade selections ranging from natural to bold.
Their Butter Gloss ($5) lipglosses are a cult classic and they’re available in 21 shades. Their Jumbo Eye Pencil ($4.50) is also great to use an eyeshadow base.
NYX remains cruelty-free despite their acquisition by L’Oreal in 2014. This is another good quality drugstore makeup brand, offering highly pigmented products in both natural and bold shades. Their lip products are particularly worth checking out, especially the Soft Matte Lip Creams and lip glosses. Their blushes and eyeshadows are also a good bang for your buck. Their Jumbo Eye Shadow Pencil in Milk is a big favorite, cheap, and versatile: you can use it as an eyeshadow primer, highlighter, and lid concealer. It’s a must-have if you want to make less-pigmented shadows pop!

Covergirl is now cruelty-free and Leaping Bunny certified, which may come as a shock to some. They are not using any loopholes and they are not selling in mainland China. Since it’s an internationally available brand, it’s nice to have a widely common brand that’s cruelty-free. Keep in mind however that their parent company is not.
Pacifica

Pacifica offers many different types of products including makeup, skincare, body care, and hair care. The best part? Their entire range is 100% vegan. They’re also fairly affordable and be found in many drugstores and at Ulta, but you can also find them online on Amazon. If you’d rather purchase from the Pacifica online store, they ship to Canada and the US but not internationally.
Some of their best-sellers include their Stellar Gaze Mineral Mascara and their Ultra CC Cream Radiant Foundation.
Pacifica is not only cruelty-free, but also 100% vegan. They offer so many products from makeup to body care and even hair care. Known for their colourful packaging, their products are also affordable and they’re available at Ulta and Target.

Pixi is available in the United States, Canada, and the UK. In the US, you’ll find them at CVS and Target. In Canada, look for them at Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall. They mainly offer makeup and skincare and they’re known for their clean, green packaging and affordable drugstore skincare. According to their founder, they’re all about creating multi-purpose products that enhance natural beauty.
Their Glow Tonic ($29) exfoliator is a cult classic.
Pixi is mainly known for their skincare, however they offer a lot of makeup products and they’re available in drugstores across the world. You can also find them at Target and Ulta.
Sonia Kashuk is exclusively available at Target and offers wearable, more natural makeup. This brand is best known for their high-quality yet affordable makeup brushes.
Please note however that some of them are made from natural animal hair which I don’t view as cruelty-free, even though the company claims that the brushes are obtained in humane ways — it’s up to you whether or not you trust this claim.
A great synthetic brush I would recommend is their Synthetic Flat Top Multipurpose Brush.
Other than the brushes, their makeup is also good quality and worth checking out, especially their Dramatically Defining Long-Wear Gel Liner, Eye On Neutral matte palette, and nail polishes.
This brand is a Walmart exclusive, and you can find it both in the United States and Canada. Their products are inexpensive and sometimes on the bold or shimmery side. Their Fast & Fabulous Setting Spray is a good drugstore setting spray and is very affordable.
BH Cosmetics offers a wide range of makeup at SUPER affordable prices! They have huge and inexpensive eyeshadow palettes, contour palettes, and more, and they’re Leaping Bunny certified.
Zoeva is a popular German makeup brand that also offers a huge selection of makeup brushes. They have an international presence as well. They offer some vegan products including their brushes, but not everything is vegan.
More Drugstore Brands
There are a few other cruelty-free drugstore brands worth mentioning, such as Jordana (owned by Milani), Flower (Drew Barrymore’s line, exclusively available at Walmart), Jane, and Prestige (both available at Ulta). Mineral Fusion can be found at Target.
For those in the UK, there’s Barry M, Sleek, and Superdrug’s brand B. which is Leaping Bunny certified.
For Canadian cruelty-free shoppers (and some American locations), there’s also the UK-based makeup brand GOSH that’s available at Shopper’s Drug Mart. The brand Quo Beauty also recently rebranded and they are not officially cruelty-free. Marcelle and Annabelle are also commonly available in drugstores and both arecruelty-free.
Clean + Conscious Cruelty-Free Brands
These brands fall under the “clean beauty”, or conscious beauty category. Their products don’t contain any ingredients that are potentially harmful. Most brands below are mid-range to high-end, but you’ll also find some that are affordable.

Complete List of Cruelty-Free Drugstore Brands
I did buy a few of the drug store brands and even though im not nessasarily impressed with the quality knowing they’re crulety free totally makes up for it. Thanks for the heads up on all these wonderful products!! 🙂
i’ve just found your page and I really want to start becoming more aware of cruelty free makeup and which one’s aren’t and this has helped me a lot! Although, I have purchased many products from loreal paris etc. I am considering using them up and never purchasing from them again! thank you for this! Farihah | Cutie Pie Frizzy
Hell yeah, that’s great! 🙂
Thank you so much for creating such a thorough and comprehensive list! Pinned!
Thanks so much for pinning! Neat blog and makeup skills!
Hi! Did I overlook some? I didn’t see Younique cosmetics listed. They are cruelty free. Also do you have a list of hair care as well? Monat is made in the USA vegan, gluten free and cruelty free. Salon quality http://Www.fullhairtoday.com
Younique is definitely NOT cruelty-free. They put on their website that they were “looking into” cruelty-free certification for over a year. But, eventually they updated that note to a plain no, they are not cruelty-free. This is on their FAQ section of their website. Monat indicates they are cruelty-free on their website, however I do not see the certification listed there. Hopefully, they will get the certification, unlike Younique who chose greed over heart.
Aveda is a little bit tricky. They don’t test on animals and aren’t sold in China, but they’re owned by Estee Lauder and their official animal testing policy is not to test on animals unless required by law. The thing is, they’re not sold in China which means they’re cruelty-free factually but not when looking at their policy.
tl;dr they’re cruelty-free for the moment but if they start selling in China and this changes, I’ll give you guys an update!
So sorry for the late reply, but thought I’d share! I’m an Aveda-trained cosmetologist and recently went back to their institute for massage therapy training, and we actually just talked about products again last week! I’m proud to say Aveda is 100% cruelty free and will remain so, as well as its sister companies: Sean John and Smashbox. I can’t say I’m as proud of Esteé Lauder and the rest of its companies. Aveda refuses to sell products in China and will continue to do so until the procedures such as animal testing change. Their statement about “..unless required by law” is just regurgitated from Esteé Lauder, Aveda absolutely does not test on animals or else I would not be such a nut about this company haha. To my knowledge Aveda isn’t on the Leaping Bunny list, though I can’t imagine why.
Here’s a good link to Esteé Lauder’s statements on animal testing. http://www.elcompanies.com/Pages/Animal-Testing-Statement.aspx
And here’s PETA’s statement about Esteé Lauder companies testing on animals. http://www.peta.org/action/action-alerts/avon-mary-kay-estee-lauder-and-revlon-are-paying-for-tests-on-animals/
Also, PETA’s list of Esteé Lauder companies. http://features.peta.org/cruelty-free-company-search/cruelty_free_companies_search.aspx?Donottest=-1&Product=0&Dotest=-1&Regchange=-1&Country=-1&Keyword=Esteé+lauder
I hope I helped clear some things up!
Thanks Caitlin! I consider Aveda to be cruelty-free myself, albeit owned by EL which isn’t.
Thanks for this! (PS, I think I read somewhere that Alba was also cruelty free…. I may have missed it, but I don’t remember seeing it on your lists! Thanks again!
Alienredqueen.wordpress.com
It’s on the full list of cruelty-free brands! 🙂
Oh, cool, thanks!
Is this just make up or facial cleansers, body scrubs, lotions? I’d like that list?
Great blog! I’m in transition to CF makeup and this reviews have helped me a lot.
Awesome, thanks so much!
What about Origins?
Sells in China, unfortunately not cruelty-free.
thank you!!!!!!!!!This is very important.Stop animal testing.
Thank you so much! I was going to buy the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette for my giveaway but since they’re even affiliated with cruelty companies I will surely pass. I’m going to get the E.L.F multi palette =)
Lipstick Queen – my favorite lipsticks – are also CF. They are missing from your Luxury brand. Consider adding them!
Yes!!
They aren’t cruelty free.
Another brand is Omorovicza!!! They’re a skin care brand but products like the Queen of Hungary facial mist and the thermal cleansing balm are awesome!
Unfortunately they announced two days ago that they’re now selling in China – SO sad!
NYR Organic is a great cruelty-free Leaping Bunny certified direct sales company whose parent company is Neal’s Yard Remedies in England. Very ethical company and great products.
Thanks, I meant to add them!
Thank you SO much for this list and all the work you put into it! 🙂
Thank you!
You forgot Boots No7 and Boots Botanics brands sold now in the US at targets as well as Walgreen’s online and Ulta beauty stores. Great products and great prices.
Yup! Quite a lot of people have the wrong idea about Boots as their other business – Boots Pharmaceuticals – have a presence in China. However, I’ve checked with both natives and ex pats who live in the China and can confirm that Boots have *no* retail presence in China (which I did read a quote from them somewhere saying that the animal testing laws there had decided them against opening stores there) and so their own brand products are still cruelty-free. =)
Please add the Body Shop to your list. They have great products, and are all cruelty free. http://www.thebodyshop.ca/en/index.aspx, (the bunny logo bottom left of page). According to Cruelty Cutter, Merle Norman is also cruelty free, but I cannot find that info on their website. Can you confirm?
Thanks so much for this info!

Does anyone know if the cosmetic brushes from IT Cosmetics are cruelty free?
Yep, they’re synthetic. 🙂
To anyone who really knows the information indepth. I am looking for a manufacturing company that is purely 100% vegan / vegetarian , cruelty-free, does not test on animals. All kinds of cosmetics, A-Z, beginning to the end, just everything, if its cosmetic. Any one could refer me to a good reliable manufacturing factory, prefer to do OEM (they do the production with my brand on it). I am in Asia, so I prefer the high-end at lowest possible cost. I am totally new to this, planning on own company, major, not minor. Even a multi list of several product from different company / country is accepted as long as it fits in the category of ‘cosmetic’ completely. Just each and everything. With FDA approved ofcourse. Thank you everyone. Just a beginner seeking for help. Hope all understands. Thank you.
Email me. I may be able to help you but I have a few questions for you to clarify what you are looking for. There is no need to blow up this thread. Email me at [email protected]. I will get back to you in the morning. Please explain who you are though as I only see OS on here for a name. 🙂 Thank you. I hope I can help you out.
I have emailed you the information. Sorry for late response. Was not online everyday.
Thank you for understanding
Is Arbonne on your list?
Nope, Arbonne is fishy.
No it’s not Arbonne is Certified Vegan!
Yet there are companies that are on here that aren’t even vegan..& some that are barely “cruelty-free”..clearly the standard are low here & some research needs to be done!
Hmmmmmm…
I don’t support pyramid schemes and never will, which is why Arbonne isn’t listed. I know you’re an Arbonne representative but you’re not doing them any favors by acting testy!
Well that is a long running pyramid scheme they’ve got going on. Almost 38 years – Go them!!
Hey Suzi I have never heard of this brand before, what do you mean by pyramid scheme? Just want to know for future reference and a better understanding of your decision making in putting things on your list.
Arbonne is vegan certified.
Hi. Thanks for the information. Re: Sonya K.’s brushes, I don’t see it as cruelty to an animal to clip or shave it’s fur. Otherwise, shaving sheep for their wool or shaving or trimming a long haired dog in the summer would be considered cruel. As far as Loreal, they profit off the sales of the companies they aquire. Some of those profits go to research and thus to cruel experimentation on animals.
Factory farms and the conditions and methods in which animal hair is obtained is what’s cruel. Sadly, it’s not as painless as giving the goats “a gentle haircut” like you would give your dog in the summer. Far from it.
great article, thanks for putting this together. other brands are kevyn aucoin, ellis faas, charlotte tilbury, and aveda. I don’t know if they have the leaping bunny logo, but they are cruelty-free as far as my knowledge. I’ll be transitioning to using cruelty-free products soon as I’m finished with my makeup. First step is swapping my Maybelline mascara for Urban Decay. I’m considering saving the Maybelline wand to reuse – something for others to consider?
Made in China ≠ retailing in China!
I always mention it in my posts when a cruelty-free brand is owned by a company that isn’t cruelty-free, but I don’t think it would be fair to scratch them off because of it!
Unfortunately, companies that sell overseas such as to China, the company has to pay the government a large sum to be able to sell in China when they are a cruelty-free company. Even though the company such as Tarte, is cruelty-free, does not test on animals, means the company/CEO sold out to animal testing to make more money to increase sales by selling in a country where there is no kindness to animals. These companies need to be called out. Basically, Tarte ignores the direct question when asked, all they have done is turned the other cheek. Shame on Tarte and other companies who sell in China.
Hey, I am from the north of England and I have been looking around to see if all my favourite brands are cruelty free (Rimmel, Maybelline, OPI, Nails Inc, Mac) and I can’t find any info anywhere for most of them. I checked PETA’s website and they didn’t have any of them. Also a shop I adore is called ‘Select’ and I can’t find out whether they are either. Really don’t want to keep giving my money to these companies if they are hurting animals in their production/testing process. Don’t suppose you know anything about the companies I’ve listed above?
Hi Roshanna. Let’s see! Rimmel, Maybelline, OPI, and MAC are not cruelty-free. MAC hasn’t been cruelty-free since 2012. I believe Nails Inc is cruelty-free though, but I’ve never heard about Select. I suggest dropping them a line if their contact info is available.
Thank you sweetpea! Will be avoiding them from now on xxx
Hey thanks ladies, finally wrapped my head around all the cruelty free stuff. Replaced my OPI polishes with some a little bit more friendly to our furry buddies! And now I have a new job I’ve been super careful.with who I’m buying from. Mac is a big no no, which was upsetting for me at first because I had a list of fancy stuff to buy when I started the new job and there were a few mac products there. Now I just stick with Make Up Revolution and a few other brands. Make up Rev is amazing quality and soooooooo affordable tonight I spent £21 in their sale, that includes postage and I got a 32 matte shadow palette, liquid concealer, contour kit, brow kit and a new eyeliner!?? i was under the impression going cruelty free was going to cost me a fortune but I’m actually saving a ton of money xx
Awesome, good luck with the transition! Don’t stop! 😀
All marks and Spencer make up is cruelty free and basically all the above sell in China where it is compulsory to test on animals. Although animal testing has been banned for cosmetic use in Europe boots own products should be ok as I don’t think there’s a boots China
rimmel maybeline & mac are not cruelty free
Thank you!
I love it! Thank you so much for making this guide. I have just started to switch my products to cruelty-free brands and this was very helpful.
Really happy to hear this! Good luck making the switch!
I don’t understand why The Body Shop isn’t listed. 100% vegetarian and always cruelty free all ingredients and products not tested on animals…
Body Shop is owned by a company that does test on animals.
So is urban decay, and Nars, as well as many others on the list at the bottom.
Urban Decay is also owned by L’Oreal, doesn’t stop it being a massive omission if you are ok with that being on the list…
I thought The Body Shop was bought by the same company which owns Aesop and L’Oreal no longer owns it, thus the Body Shop is 100% cruelty free?
I think this post is meant to focus only on makeup brands.
If it’s vegetarian then it’s not vegan (animal friendly).
I’m not able to find Nars, Becca, Illamasqua, ByTerry, nor Korres in The Leaping Bunny or Peta websites. Where were you able to find that these companies are cruelty-free?
I talk about this throughout my blog. From my list of cruelty-free brands page: “There are 3 types of cruelty-free brands in this list: those that are certified by the Leaping Bunny, those that have signed PETA’s pledge, and those that aren’t affiliated with any cruelty-free organization.(…) Since cruelty-free certification is done on a voluntary basis, not all cruelty-free companies are certified. If a company or brand has an official cruelty-free claim, and if they don’t test products nor ingredients on animals, don’t hire third parties to test on animals on their behalf, and don’t sell their products in China, it’s considered a cruelty-free company, and I make sure to include it on this list, as well as include proof and correspondence.”
What about New Avon LLCc? It is cruelty free, it’s not the same Avon since they were bought out last year.
i just discovered your blog and i’m already in love! Thank you for posting so many helpful articles, especially this one which helps break down popular brands that we can trust. I just started working at Sephora so I’m still learning everything in the industry, and this article has made me much more knowledgeable!
Hi Nina! Congrats on the new job, that’s awesome! I’m happy to help and I wish you good luck with the job! 🙂
Hi suzi and thanks for putting this list together! You might have heard recently but if not, lime crime was recently busted for not being vegan/cruelty free as they claim. The owner, Doe Deere, has removed ingredients such as carmine from the website, but the ingredient is still printed on the packaging of products where red pigment occurs. I’M not trying to assassinate anyone’s character here as I’m a huge fan of lime crime, I feel very strongly that honesty shouldn’t be compromised just because veganism is perceived as a fashion trend. people are really counting on those labels being a hundred percent honest, consumers have the right to know where their money is going.
I posted about Lime Crime recently! Keep in mind, they were busted for not being vegan years ago (before 2012 I believe). Their stuff is vegan today (but I would not support this company in a million years!).
Really! I thought the vegan claim being busted was a recent thing. Its a shame how deep the rabbit hole of crazy goes, the products and packaging are so cute! Just SO much drama :/
I know! I love so badly the packing, but I understand why many people don’t wanna buy it anymore. It’s about false publicity, they lied to the customers just using the “cruelty free” and “vegan” labels for marketing stategy and sell more products. Fine they are like the clamed, but unfortuneally people won’t believe it so easy. I mean, at least with Shiseido, L’Oreal, Estée Lauder, Elizabeth Arden, P&G, Uniliever and Clorox we know what’s happening and we have the power of changing the things not buying their products but supporting their brands which are cruelty free with the pros and cons. Kudos for the list Suzi.
Kylie Cosmetics is cruelty-free, but I’ll have to get back to you about the other brands.
Check in Jefree Star’s website in FAQ section, and I have curiosity about Kylie Cosmetics….
They said its not leaping bunny certified,so the Kylie brand is not cruelty free.
